Essay Significant Leadership I consider myself a leader in my community. In my work at Wayne (WSU), I had several leadership positions. As President of Circle K, a community service group, I did everything from picking up trash on the side of the road to singing Christmas carols at a retirement home. I was also responsible for helping to stuff boxes for “Kids Against Hunger” and I organized a Halloween party for children. While at WSU I also was vice president of the Pile High Council, which was the hall I lived in.

I helped to plan socials and activities for the residents of our hall. We were also responsible for listening to other residents and helping to define changes that needed to be made in our hall. I served as secretary for the Cardinal Key club which was an honors club. We created a dodge ball tournament in order to raise funds for Juvenile Diabetes; we also planned a coronation ceremony for Homecoming festivities. As a member of Habitat for Humanity, I helped raise money for the homeless and helped to build a house.

Currently, I am a member of the Kiwanis club in Omaha, Nebraska, which is my home town. In this capacity, I help to raise scholarships and serve food with the Salvation Army. I have also collected school supplies and volunteered at Ronald McDonald House as part of my work with the Kiwanis. All of these activities have helped me understand the needs of the community.Essay 2 Volunteerism I have always been someone who enjoys working with people and serving where I can. I live in a small rural town where everyone knows everyone else.

I work with the local Kiwanis to assist the local community in many ways. I have helped raise money for scholarships and then have awarded them. I have served food for the Salvation Army and I have gathered school supplies for under privileged children. I also have volunteered to help in Special Olympics and I am working with Ronald McDonald House to help children in need. When I was obtaining my degree at Wayne State University, I was involved in several volunteer efforts. I worked with Habitat for the Humanity to help build a house for people in need.

Because I would like to be a doctor, I have also had the opportunity to shadow several doctors in various capacities. As an example, I have shadowed several family doctors, geriatric doctors and OB/GYN doctors to understand how to work with different types of people in a variety of settings. I have also learned about bedside manner, helping patients reclaim their dignity and find the necessary resources for good healthcare. I also packaged food for a program called Kids Against Hunger. These programs have taught me to work a variety of people and to respect different cultures.

I continue to look for volunteer opportunities in my community because I feel that one must understand the needs in their present community in order to be able to understand the needs on a more global level.
