Wolfe's story entitled Say Yes document's the conversation of a husband and wife told from the man's perspective, while they are doing the dishes. Their conversation revolved around the possibility of an intimate relationship between a black and a white. The husband was really against the idea of marriage between people from two different races because of their lingual and cultural differences. On the other hand, the wife argued that if two people love each other, it is enough to keep them together and make the relationship work.

In the middle of the conversation, the husband noticed that his wife disregards washing the dishes properly, got mad, and returned all the silverware to the sink making her wife wounded. At this, the husband hurried to the room to get supplies in order to aid his wife's bleeding finger. Hoping that it would end their argument, the husband asked his wife to stay in the room and let him finish the washing by himself. However, the wife persisted to stay asking him if there is any chance that he would pursue their marriage if she was black.

The husband answered that he would not because she wouldn't be the person that she is if she were black. The wife persisted but in the end, the husband answered that he wouldn't have married her if she were black. The story ended with the husband apologizing to his wife and trying to make it up to him by saying yes, he would marry her regardless of her skin color. Journal Summary This story tells how a man uses his rationality to prove his point and win the argument with his wife. It draws a picture of a man who will fight for his ideas yet still shows his concern which illustrates his ability to separate his argument with his emotional attachment to his wife.

This also shows a woman's typical personality-emotional, persistent, tries everything to emotion and will do everything to win her husband's approval. In the end, the love of the husband wins out, making him surrender and yield to his wife.
