The argument whether the ‘New Deal’ was a success or a mere bureaucratic approach to relieve the pressures government was facing then, it is more important to analyze how America emerged in the post depression era. There are many questioned that may be answered as ‘No’. However, it is an undeniable fact that American society observed new horizons of life and learned new lessons. People were afraid of the loss of work and the hardships that would accompany with the economic calamity. Depression was not only an economic devastation, but it changed the social perspective entirely.

For instance, women find it easier to get low-wage jobs that opens new opportunities for them although it was a clear deviation from ideal gender roles in a family at that time. Farmers could not bear the heavy burdens of banks loans and saw the commodity prices fall sharply. The event forced mass agricultural based population to move in urban settlements to find a job. By the introduction of CCC, NWA, and WPA, people start thinking that their government is actually working for them. The government had more control and an increased influence on people’s life and that lingers on till today.

Just when the American economy was reshaping itself and recuperating from the depression, United States was forced to enter into the WWII. Ironically, the war helped the economic activity and reduced employment that had surged to more than 11 percent. However, economists believe that the real prosperity started not before the war ended. What bothers me most is the concept that freedom comes through government. Ideally, government should protect its citizens from internal or external violent and destructive elements.

Should government be allowed to start a war? I think people have a right to be free and decide what is best for their lives. To ensure freedom, constitution needs to empower people who in turn keep the government in its legitimate boundaries. Thanks to our ‘Founding Fathers’ who defined the rights of people in our constitution. It means we have all the rights to elect, direct or even bring a new government if one is unable to protect American interests. In my opinion, role of the government should be modest, to legislate rules and regulation to serve all.

American wants and allow their governments to take actions on its own e.g. to safeguard the national sovereignty, but we need to be extra careful in doing that because the worst form of a bigger government is socialism.
