Research Facility for Community One problem with education is that it can be too structured and this lead to alot of academic and intellectual talents being held and never being unleashed to the world. In the United States, there has been a debate, critiquing the fact that the education system is designed to stuff people with information, but never to helps them to think (Null & Ravitch, 59). Albert Einstein, one of the legendary scientists of the 20th century argued that education should be the process of helping people on how to think, but not supplying people with facts. It is almost agreeable to almost anyone that if the educations system was less rigid and more accommodative for the young minds to learn and explore their imagination, there would be more academic work being achieved. The best thing about helping young people to start having this kind of attitude with regard to education is that once there are young scientists, they will have a longer time to explore their area of interest. This will be unlike the situation where by the time many people start thinking scientifically, they are already too old and they do not have much time left to explore their scientific interest. Albert Einstein died while he was still researching his theory of relativity, trying to develop a theory of all things. Maybe if he had started earlier, he could have had the time to deliver the grandest scientific theory, a theory of everything. The best way to contribute to the scientific world in the modern world is by encouraging and making it easy for the young students to be interested in science and science projects as early as possible. This would lead to a breed of young scientists, who may even be at their teens. To do this, there needs to be mechanism that would be in place in order to make this a possibility. Many young people have way too much time and energy in them and in most cases they can use this energy for the wrong purposes. By developing a way to keep them busy, it is easy to exploit this energy to also prevent them from getting into the wrong habits. Historical background One of the main issues that have erupted in the education arena in the last few hundred years was the formalization of education. In the earlier days, education was never done in school, and many people were home education. As the public education needs increased and many parents could not home educate their children, it became necessary to have a public education system that would take care of the so many children who would in any other case go without an education. While this solved a number of problems, the formal education has also acted as a hindrance to education itself in a number of ways. The main issue is probably its structured-ness. Students in one grade are treated as the same, mainly without regard of the variance in intellectual abilities, variance in intellectual interests (which areas of study one is not interested in) etc. This has been criticized by such inventors and intellectual personalities such as C.S. Lewis who in one of his essays argued that he was glad that schooling did not interfere with his education. Other intellectuals have also said that they were glad that they were never taken to school, because she believed that is she had been taken to school, it would have been worse for her. Recent intellectuals such as Steve Wozniak, the cofounder of the technology leader, Apple Inc. also has been quoted as saying that the modern education system in the United States fails in creating an environment that helps people to think, and concentrates on teaching people facts. Considering such facts, it then becomes clear that education in USA is failing in the quest to provide a good environment for maximum scientific enquiry. It is therefore necessary to note that something needs to be done in order to deal with this major fault in the American scientific arena. Since it is not easy to overhaul the whole education system, it might be necessary to have something that can work parallel to the education system and that will help in making sure that the young minds are encouraged to think and come up with their own inventions and research. The project Community-based research carried out by young students The way this will work is have community center where local students can participate in research processes and deliver research materials. This community centre will include a lecture hall where students can give and receive lectures in various intellectual issues. A research facility which will include a state of the art library (with computer an digital information source such as the internet and eBooks) and a simple laboratory. The students will be though I smoke research methods and then they will be asked to carry out various types of research from social sciences to pure sciences. The research projects will be based in the issues in the community. For instance, a group of students may want to do a research in the relations between the level of education in their community and the rates of crime. While these research projects may not necessary function as a basis for more serious actions and policy development, they will offer some insights into the societal issues and at the same time help student to become better at research, the main important thing here is to introduce students to research methods and help them to be more invested in scientific enquiry while they are still very young. The young people will be required to write proposal for their research, if they do need a funding for their project. They are to write a credible research proposal don’t also deliver critical research result after they are through with their research. Requirements A lecture hall This lecture hall will be called an ivory hall and the main importance f the hall is to help in the sharing of ideas. Anyone can give a lecture in the hall. College and university students who are currently doing their courses in various universities will be invited to come and give their lectures here at the hall, where the students will be listening to them. Anyone, including professors, government workers can be included. Local police etc can choose to come and give a culture on a specific subject. Upon approve of their topic, a notice will be placed in the hall entrance, as well as the website, noting the lecture, its purpose, who will be talking and what will be talked about. Anyone in the community can attend, from the parents to the young students who are on high school and colleges. Library The library will be free for the members of the public, but for easy managed they will be required to register for membership (for free). The library will feature hardcopy books, ebooks, online researches etc. this will help in the research process for those who want to involve themselves in research. A simple laboratory Costs Starting costs Building and furnishing a lab Building and sticking the library Acquiring the land Building and furnishing he hall Recurrent expenditure Salaries Restocking the library with new books Grants for research Utilities such as electricity, phone bills stationery etc Budget Initial costs Land 10,000 Building 200,000 Furniture 5,000 Books 10,000 recurrent expenses Salaries/monthly 5,000 utilities/month 500 other resources/month 100 How the project will be executed To make things easier, the project will not be executed at the same time. This will be achieved in a gradual way, implementing one phase at a time. The first phase will involve building the library and this will be followed by the lecture hall. The laboratory will then follow. The cost will be based on a number of factors among them the location where the project will be done. Interim deliverables The interim deliverables will be a library and a lecture hall. As more people are attracted to the project, there will be more resources added to the project to make it complete. The finals deliverables A fully furnished library A fully equipped basic science laboratory A fully equipped public lecture hall installed with the right technology as the video recruit and sound systems (public address) Why I should be the one to complete the project This project proposal comes from a point of my life long interests. When I was growing up, I become interested with scientists and inventors as well as innovators who seemed to be less dependent on the formal education to achieve what they achieved. I believe that science has all the solutions to all the problems that humanity has today. However, for these solutions to be unlocked, more scientific inquiry has to be executed. I have held this view for long and I believe that this will be the answer. My passion to make this work will be the enduring force that will make the project to the be successful. At the same time, I was brought up in a community where I think this kind of project would be the most needed and therefore probably the most successful. Project execution schedule Phase one Purchasing of the land The nature of the project requires a land to be located and bought so that the hall and the library can be constructed. Finding a prime land and buying this land will be the first thing that will need to be done for the project won’t be successful. Construction Once the land is located and secures, the next step will be to develop the land. The development will have to take consideration of the various resources that need to be done. First, off, the library and the hall be constructed according to the plan and layout that will have been developed. More room will be left for the construction of the laboratory later. Furnishing of the lab The laboratory and the library will then be furnished once hey have been constructed and they are ready for occupations. This will include buying the necessary resources such as books, equipment etc. These resources will be both slowly and one by one in order to make sure that nothing goes into mishap. Kick off Once the library and the hall are up and running, the project will start operation not don’t will be opened for the public. A sensitization campaign will then be carried out in order to make sure that the community know about the project and that they can start using it. After the first phase is compete and successful, (the library and the lecture hall) the laboratory will then be constructed and equipped. The whole project will have gone live by the time the laboratory is done and equipped. At completion, an evaluation of the project will be carried out in order to achieve two main things; To evaluate the cost of the project Any overhead costs that were not budgeted for will be identified and plans to take care of these costs. In any project, there can be excess costs which will be incurred is come unplanned issues come up during the project execution. If this will be the case, there will be a need to come up with a way t take care of this extra costs. To evaluate the effectiveness of the project This will be necessary in order to identify whether the project is achieving what it was intended to achieve. If it is found that it is doing so, it will then be necessary to identify how it can be made better. This will be important in makings sure that any issues that needs to be addressed after the project is compete have been addressed effectively. It will pave way for any counter actions that may be required to keep the project on track. Work cited Null, Wesley & Ravitch, Diane.
