Art Analysis Dall’s Sheep Department Art Analysis: Dall’s Sheep Michael Mauro’s Dalls Sheep Mitchell, SD, 2007 is an incredible peace of art archived by Huntington Witherill. The size of the smallest pigment ink print is 11 by 14 inches; the medium measures 16 by 20 inches; and the largest is 20 by 28 inches1. The item shows a proper balance of the subject matter within the frame. Even though the fore legs of the Dall’s sheep are raised, on the ice-capped rocky landscape, the sheep is centrally placed and is proportional to viewers.

Taken from below, the emphasis of the photo is on the whitish, rocky foreground and the underside of the sheep. There is immense contrast of white color and dark colors, which clearly creates the texture of the whole item. The high repetition of white color and subtle grey color bring out the unity of appearance of the whole landscape and the sheep through a variety of effects including the lighting and the abstract function of the art. The art properly plays its most important function of conveying critical information about the rugged landscape; the unforgiving cold weather and the thick skies in which the animal lives.

Dall’s Sheep conveys the white animal’s natural adaptation to a snowy environment which basically keeps it out of sight for its predators2. The item captures the attractive qualities of a 21st century art, despite its presenting in the ancient black and white colors of the early 20th century and before. The unpredictable nature of life in the unforgiving conditions where Dall’s Sheep survives is well captured in the art by the mysterious black and white color. Meanwhile, the artist’s intent was to present these mysteries in the art and he did manage to achieve the objective.

I think the art means there is a glimmer of hope in the animal’s life as evidenced in the excessive use of white color. The rough terrain symbolizes the challenges that the animal encounters in the polar region. I believe the art is immensely valuable in the sense that it evokes memories and feelings of survival of animals and sportspersons that brave the unforgiving weather.
