The Concept of Genre in Films By Die Hard Film GenreThe Concept of Genre in Films The core goal of this article is to address the aspect of a genre and the understanding it brings to the audience. I intend to discuss on what genre is, its usefulness with regards to film and specifically the application to the Die Hard film. The other objective of this research and discussion into is to establish an understanding of how films are built to effective represent the genre to its audience. Readers appreciate the concept of genre because of its encouraging and familiar potential of repetition and variation. The notion of type is essential in arousing the anticipations of an audience and how they perceive, judge and selects texts (Cettl, 2009 p. 67). In order for a successful Action film, the expectations of the readers ought to be fulfilled to enable the listeners to be fascinated and interested. Action is the most appropriate genre that I have chosen with respect to the Die Hard film of 1988. The entire movie is an action genre movie. Genres in respect to film are diverse forms of recognizable classifications of films recurrent with similar acknowledgeable patterns, syntax and filming conventions that include: backgrounds and props, substance and subject matter, themes, period, mood, motifs, structures, plot, circumstances, central narrative events, recurring icons, characterizations and stars. Numerous films are viewed as hybrids because they include multiple film genres. With regards to definitions, genre itself is a French word meaning type or kind. It can, therefore, be said the kind of a movie is principally the type or category a movie falls into for instance Comedy, action, western, thriller, horror and numerous others (Wright, 2004 p. 35). Genres are also sub-classified according to unique qualities for example horror genre, sub-classes are the supernatural, gothic, ghost films, occult, monster movies, slashers, psychological horror, body horror, gore movies, splatter and many others (Dixon, 2000 p. 101). Some film professionals develop new genres and sub-genres to explain amalgamation of films such as action comedies. Universally, nonetheless, many films created in a given type, for instance, film noir follow the fundamental construction and plot shapes of that particular kind. Genres assist the audience in movie choice as well as indicate for whom a given film was created and what they should anticipate seeing for instance in an action film such as the Die hard, the audience expect to see hard work that involve, use of heavy artillery, use of choppers, massive destruction of vehicles, buildings and so on. Categorization of films helps the producers of the movies to select and target a particular type of audience to sell the movie to. Promotion of the film through genre helps in the economic growth of the movie industry since some genres are well known larger profit through sales than other movies (Connelly, 2000 p. 65). The film industry has grown since the time in memorial. Due to amplified reputation in a movies, there was a development of guidelines as an effort to understand the significance of film. From this instance emerged in aggregation with the fictional movement and approval of critical studies known as genre studies. Each genre carries its elements that create and display its uniqueness for instance storyline, background, stars, characterization and style, as well as devices such as action series or stunts. There are numerous characteristics that make a film fit into a given genre for instance in action films the hero appears to be a simple person but most of the time tricky and wise while the villain seem to be of a high-status quo with massive resources and seems to be severe and unfair in a number of circumstances (Moine, 2008 p. 140). There are a number of benefits of the use of genre in categorizing films as it makes it easier to market the movie to the target audience. As various individuals have diverse preferences to particular genres, it simplifies the distinguishing process of the kind of movies they can enjoy. The knowledge of a type gives an individual a greater position of what to expect and while watching the film the viewer will unconsciously recall similar plots lines from previous movies; the aspect gives them the a greater understanding of the plot as well as the ending. On another account, genres benefit actors in a big way in terms of popularity. An actor may have featured in a particular film that was successful; the popularity of that given film will enable him to attract more audience in a new film he features in. As a result, we can say that actors can use a genre to popularize themselves and future films they feature in. Genre also supports the film industry to determine the popularity of the movie and establish the amount of money the movie will make at the box office. Just like music genres, a film developer appreciates the elements that are probably in a movie genre and navigate the movie towards that end. Individual actors stick to a given film genre, directors and script writers for example John Ford, who worked in his entire career with the Western film genre. The individuals are usually enough in a particular genre and as a result they are extremely successful. The film genre is finally to the director of the movie. Film producers can use the symbols and backgrounds from previous films within the same genre family to appeal to the emotions of the audience. Genre gives restrictions to the director and forces him to follow the storyline correctly and avert the use of themes that could be utterly contradictory to the original impression of the film and consequently loose the target audience (Manchel, 1990). A genre is a response to the questions, desires, wishes, anticipations and fantasies of the audiences. Genre from a mass media standpoint is a tool for aiding and mass medium to produce consistently and efficiently as well as relate its production to the anticipations of audiences. Theory of genre is the description of films; it is a system used for shortening literary forms. It can also be said to be an apparatus that enable the audiences from an individual capacity to plan the choices to make with respect to the films (McQuail, 1987 pg. 200). Genres allow the creation and the sustenance of loyal audience that gets used to seeing programs within a given type. Similarly, genre is a means of controlling the demand of the audience. The relative constancy of genres empowers the producers to foresee the anticipations of the audience. There are two key categories of genres namely; fiction that regards to events, things and characters that are not true and non-fiction that involves events and objects that are based on facts. Audiences become aware of what to expect from the movies because of the genres involved. Type theory is used in the evaluation of films in order to allow classification of films. Genres rely on numerous aspects such as the story line, the expectations of the audience as well as who the director is (Walker, 2012 p. 57). Action film characters are apparently black and white. There are many aspects that make an action film appropriate to the genre. Leading is the action. The massive use of violence means many people die, and things are blown apart, most frequently aircrafts and helicopters. The other aspect of an action film is the use of firearms. Often, there is an infinite supply of artilleries and vehicles available for the villains while the hero has to seek whatever means. The other aspect is that women participate either on the right or wrong side. The female characters are often exquisite and in their late 20’s or early 30’s with slender and tanned physiques. If they play a role on the safe side, they often carry sophisticated weapons are prepared with amusing remarks to daunt the man trying to attack them (Grant 2003). Weapons are conventional in all action genre films. When Hans requests John to drop the gun, John should obey him since Hans also has Holly under the villain’s control. When Hans initially points his weapon at John, it causes John to begin laughing in order to by sometime. When Hans aims his firearm at John for a next time, John is compelled to reach for the weapon on his back and succeeds to slay one of Hans’ henchmen whereas harming Hans. The event demonstrates that the character with the gun has authority and control. The use of the firearm also assists to push the plot forward. Another support is the wristwatch on Holly’s arm. It becomes significant when Hans drops out the window while still clinging onto Holly. The watch halts the narrative from continuing forward as it thwarts Hans from tumbling to his demise. John manages to defeat Hans once he succeeds to take the wristwatch off Holly’s arm (Grant, 2003). The outfits and make up exploited in Die Hard demonstrate transformation amid characters and also operates as camouflages. In this structure, Hans and his henchman are wearing official suits. John in the Die Hard movie represents those people who go through hardships but still maintain their focus that in turn helps them to overcome all the challenges and ultimately obtain their goal. The audience is intrigued by the situation where John must handle the hostage situation under the authority of the Villain, who is a terrorist. What captivates more is how John, who is an off duty cop, will handle a hostage situation and whether he will get support from the reigning administration. Film genre plays a significant role in the industry of cinema. It aids the script writer to concentrate his thoughts better as well as words. It also helps the director to design the flow and the touch of the film because that way, the audience will be much comfortable and elect choices that suit their preference.
